Career & College Clubs’ Benefits for GEAR UP Programs

Career & College Clubs is a great option for organizations that receive funding through
the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP).

Shared Goals

Career & College Clubs shares the GEAR UP goal to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. In the 370 schools that have adopted Career & College Clubs, 76% of students were eligible for Free and Reduced Price Meals.

Each year of Career & College Clubs’ curriculum furthers the required activities (and many of the allowable activities) for both state and partnership GEAR UP grants:

  • Providing information regarding financial aid for postsecondary education to eligible participating students.
  • Encouraging student enrollment in rigorous and challenging curricula and coursework, in order to reduce the need for remedial coursework at the postsecondary level.
  • Implementing activities to improve the number of participating students who obtain a secondary school diploma, and complete applications for, and enroll in, a program of postsecondary education.

Students as Leaders

True to Career & College Clubs’ core belief that students are valued and can make important contributions, students themselves had a role in development and revision of the curriculum. As a result, the curriculum has an emphasis on student empowerment and leadership, and the activities are designed to appeal to the unique interests of early teenagers. For this age group, in particular, peers are incredibly influential, which is why Career & College Clubs harnesses the power of peer-to-peer learning to encourage positive behaviors and a culture of achievement.

This strategy is especially important for encouraging at-risk students to aspire to postsecondary education, as they may have fewer adults in their lives willing or able to encourage them.

Turnkey Solution

Once a site signs on, they receive everything they need to successfully implement Career & College Clubs. NCCEP provides a comprehensive curriculum, implementation recommendations, staff training, and ongoing support to ensure students maximize their potential.

An NCCEP Program

GEAR UP programs that are members of NCCEP are eligible to receive valuable in-kind support that can be used toward their GEAR UP grant match requirement.

In addition, future NCCEP/GEAR UP conferences will include programming specific to Career & College Clubs implementers, as well as opportunities for site staff to interact and share lessons learned.
